The famous Stanley Cup hockey trophy disappeared temporarily on Sunday (22 August) as it was being transported on an Air Canada flight.

Walter Neubrand, keeper of the cup, was delivering it to Jake Goertzen, head scout for the Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning, on a flight from Vancouver to Fort St. John. However on arrival at Fort St. John the two became concerned when the trophy did not appear with the rest of the baggage.

Air Canada agents checked the aircraft and then contacted their colleagues in Vancouver.

It emerged that airline officials in Vancouver had decided that the 16kg cup was too heavy to fly and it was removed from the aircraft before the flight took off.

The cup was flown to Fort St. John the next day and the airline is now reviewing how the incident occurred, reports The Associated Press.
