The Australian competition authority has approved an extension to the alliance between Qantas Airways and British Airways.
The joint services agreement allows the two airlines to coordinate their schedules, sales and pricing on services between Sydney and London.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has authorised the deal for five years, rejecting a request from the two airlines for it to be extended indefinitely.
Rival carriers have claimed that the partnership is anti-competitive, and Virgin Atlantic is said to be considering challenging the decision.
