China has responded to Vietnam's plans to operate commercial flights to the disputed Spratly islands in the South China Sea.

A statement from China's Foreign Ministry said that the move was a violation of China's territorial sovereignty and was "illegal and invalid", according to Reuters.

Ownership of some or all of the Spratly islands is claimed by Vietnam, China, Taiwan, Brunei, Malaysia and the Philippines.
