The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has put back the deadline for a new safety rule and is considering extending it even further in a move that could save airlines USD200m.

FAA officials said that although the move would not affect aircraft safety it would relieve some pressure on the struggling airline industry.

The new regulation covering maintenance and inspection schedules will now not come into force until 2008. It was originally scheduled to come into force on 6 December 2004 and was proposed after the TWA flight 800 disaster in 1996 off New York when a fault in a fuel tank caused the aircraft to explode, reports Reuters.
