Myanmar is set to launch its second international airline by the end of 2004 as it seeks to expand its links throughout Asia and Australia.

The new airline, called Air Myanmar, will initially start with flights from Yangon to Sydney, Australia via Singapore and a four-leg service taking in Bangkok and Shanghai in China, Seoul, South Korea and Fukuoka, Japan.

A launch date for the airline has yet to be released and the Myanmar government is still seeking some aircraft registration and operational certificates. The new airline is a joint project between state-controlled Myanmar Airways, the Dawn Light Company, Cathay Aviation and Fast Growth Associates Limited.

The new airline has already recruited some 143 cabin crew and is still looking for staff to work on its fleet of Airbus A300-600 and A310-300 aircraft, reports Agence France-Presse.
