Civair, a budget airline that was to start flying from South Africa to Britain last weekend, has cancelled all flights, the company said on Thursday (9 December).

The carrier was scheduled to fly three times a week from Cape Town to London's Stansted airport, once a week with a stop in Durban. The original launch date, 30 October, was postponed and on 5 December all fights were cancelled.

According to the company, an American investor did not come up with promised ZAR15m (USD2.5m) and the company was unable to purchase a Boeing 747-200 to operate the flights. Civair officials declined to give the name of the investor.

The airline has promised to refund the 4,200 passengers who had purchased tickets priced between ZAR1,999 (USD342) and ZAR3,999 (USD685) one-way.
