An Airbus A320 aircraft operated by Northwest Airlines was diverted to Des Moines, Iowa on 14 December after smoke started to accumulate in the rear cargo area.

The aircraft, which was on its way from Detroit to Denver, was carrying 151 people. The problem was later traced to a broken recirculation fan.

About a dozen of the passengers asked for treatment due to smoke irritation at the airport in Des Moines, The Associated Press reported.
