The Los Angeles City Council has given final approval to a two-stage USD11bn plan for Los Angeles International Airport.
Under the plans the airport would be remodelled, and the 12-3 vote in favour of the project means that the work could start as early as spring 2005 if it also receives approval from the US Federal Aviation Administration. Phase one of the project would apparently see USD3bn being spent on expanding the capacity of the airport by nearly 30% to 78m passengers annually. It would also see the realignment of a runway and the construction of a new transit hub and rental car centre.
The second phase would reportedly include removing three of seven terminals and building a remote check-in centre about 1.6km away from the airport. This phase apparently includes controversial elements and the USD8bn plans require further study.
According to The Associated Press, part of the project includes plans to spend USD500m on reducing traffic and noise as well as job training for the airport and aviation employees. The plans have not however been met with approval everywhere: the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors said last week that it would sue the city as the upgrade does not address security concerns. Since then, talks have been launched and officials have been expressing optimism about resolving the issue.
The upgrade to the airport is the first since 1984, Reuters reported.
