Tear gas was the cause of Germany's Frankfurt airport being briefly closed yesterday (15 December).

Some travellers and staff reportedly suffered breathing problems and eye irritations and these problems were attributed to tear gas, but a police spokesman said there were no indications that the incident had been planned or that it had been an attack.

The airport's terminal buildings were closed for about an hour and about 40 persons were given medical treatment, Reuters reported.

It was however unclear where the gas originated, a Lufthansa spokesman said. Police had reportedly investigated suspect luggage in the affected area.
