A Cathay Pacific Airways Boeing 777-300 engine exploded shortly after takeoff from Bangkok, Thailand, on Wednesday (1 December), dropping debris on a car driving near the airport, according to reports.

The aircraft managed to turn around and land safely back at Bangkok airport with no injuries to the 348 passengers or the driver of the car. A spokesperson for Deputy Transport Minister Vichet Kasemthongsri said that the engine on the flight to Bombay, India, malfunctioned shortly after takeoff causing an explosion.

Cathay Pacific said that a piece of debris about 1.5 metres wide and 2 metres long landed on the roof of a car near the airport and that it is talking to its insurance company over compensation for the car's driver. Passengers from the flight were transferred to another aircraft and an investigation has begun, reports The Associated Press.
