South Korean airline Asiana Airlines has requested permission from the Philippine Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) to raise its fuel surcharge for flights from the country.

The airline wants a USD1 increase on a state-approved USD7 fuel surcharge due to rising fuel costs. The matter will be discussed at a public hearing on 9 December 2004. Meanwhile the Philippine government has announced that it is to allow Asiana Airlines to fly more often to the country's Clark Airport. The government is also planning talks with South Korea over a new bilateral air services agreement.

Hong Kong-based airline Cathay Pacific Airways is also seeking an increase in its fuel surcharge, to USD27 for long-haul flights and USD9.20 for short-haul flights, despite increases in October 2004 to USD19 on long-haul and USD7 on short-haul flights. The CAB will hear its case on 8 December 2004, reports PNA.
