A man from Libya, arrested after a security scare at the Durham-Tees Valley Airport, a small regional airport in north-eastern England, has been released without charge after being detained under the Terrorism Act.

The regional airport was reportedly closed for two hours on Saturday (18 December) after the man was removed from an aircraft operated by the airline bmi, and army experts carried out a controlled explosion of his luggage, The Associated Press reported.

No traces of explosives were found by investigators, and according to police the man was released after being questioned. The man was reportedly employed by a Libyan oil company and had been studying in the UK for six months. No further information has been disclosed.

The airport's commercial manager said that six flights and about 750 passengers were delayed due to the temporary closure of the airport.
