A joke text message sent by an Italian man to his wife has caused an international security alert.

The man was aboard a Lauda Air flight from Sydney, Australia to Vienna, Austria and sent his wife a message saying that the aircraft had been hijacked by terrorists when the flight landed for refuelling in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, reported Sydney's Sunday Telegraph. The passenger's wife contacted the Italian police, who contacted the Italian embassy in Canberra. The embassy contacted the Australian Federal Police. The authorities were reportedly able to quickly confirm the identity of the sender and discover that the message was a fake one.

A spokesman for the Australian transport minister John Anderson confirmed the newspaper report, The Associated Press said.
