The US government has published an intention to raise the taxes for agricultural quarantine and inspection services from 1 January 2005, a move that has raised objections from airlines.

Airlines are seeing this as a stealth increase in taxes that pay for inspections of produce and plants that cross the country's border, according to The Associated Press. The Air Transport Association has estimated that the cost of the increased taxes will be USD680m over the next six years.

ATA has said it hopes that this is a bureaucratic problem and that the administration will correct it immediately.
