India on Wednesday (29 December) agreed to allow two private airlines, Jet Airways and Sahara Air, to fly to most overseas destinations, ending the monopoly of state-owned Air-India and Indian Airlines.

The two private airlines will not begin services on the profitable routes to Gulf states for another three years, said the Indian Civil Aviation Minister.

The government did not disclose when the airlines will be allowed to fly to other international destinations.
