Germanwings reports profits

Low-cost German airline Germanwings, a part of Lufthansa, made its first profit this year as sales rose 60%, and plans to expand with a new hub and extra aircraft next year, the company said on Thursday (30 December).

The airline said its sales rose to around EUR245m (USD333.2m) in 2004 from EUR150m (USD204m) in 2003, and the number of passengers rose 46% to 3.5m.

Germanwings' supervisory board had approved an order for three new Airbus aircraft, which is expected to be placed at the beginning of 2005, reported Reuters. In addition, the aircraft, currently operating from Cologne/Bonn and Stuttgart airports, plans to open a third hub in Germany.
