Air travel in the southern North Island, New Zealand was disrupted yesterday (15 February) due to a severe late summer storm.

The weather conditions, which brought winds gusting up to 100 mph, forced two domestic flights to turn back to Wellington minutes before they were due to land late Sunday night.

The storm, which also affected the north of the South Island, cut electricity to thousands of homes in Wellington and Auckland, and also disrupted road, sea and rail travel.
