A woman has been sentenced to three years imprisonment after being detained at Barbados' Grantley Adams International Airport with cocaine.

The 29-year-old woman - said to be of Brazilian descent - was detained at the airport on 28 January 2004 after she admitted to police during a random search that she had cocaine in her possession. She was taken to a hospital where she passed 73 small packets of cocaine which she had swallowed, while another three were found in a body cavity.

The woman was also fined BBD240,000. If she does not pay the fine by the end of her prison term, she faces an additional two years in jail, reported The Associated Press.
