The US government has stated that major US airlines posted near-record on-time performance in 2003.

The US Transportation Department revealed that on-time performance reached 81.9%, even though more than 1m flights were late and 100,000 cancelled. Data showed that 17 major airlines operated more than 6.4m flights in 2003, about 1.2m more than the previous year. Just over 1m flights were late by at least 15 minutes, compared with 868,000 in the previous year.

The agency also said that consumers filed the fewest number of complaints ever about air service, although complaints totalled nearly 6,000 for the year, reported Reuters.
