Italian carrier Alitalia is expected to cancel a number of services scheduled for today (9 February) due to a 24-hour pilot strike.

The Pilot's Union - which represents about 1,400 Italian pilots - called for the strike action to protest against the airline's 2004-2006 reorganisation plans. The plans are said to call for a salary freeze and the reduction of about 2,700 jobs.

The action has prompted the airline to cancel 159 flights for today, while 19 other flights will be altered, The Associated Press reported.
