Flights in the eastern Mediterranean region were disrupted on Thursday (22 January) by snow storms and gale-force winds.

In Turkey international and domestic flights from Istanbul's Ataturk International Airport were delayed by up to two hours and some domestic flights were cancelled.

Officials at Greece's international airport in Athens cancelled 25 flights, mostly to domestic destinations. A spokesperson at the airport said that most regional airports in northern Greece and the islands were partially closed.

In Egypt sand storms and heavy wind and rain forced the closure of four regional airports but Cairo's international airport was able to remain open.

Meanwhile tornadoes brought heavy rain and strong winds to Cyprus and a flight en route from Bulgaria to Larnaca's international airport had to be diverted to the western town of Paphos, reported Reuters.
