Countries whose citizens are allowed to travel to the US without visas will be unable to meet this year's deadline to upgrade passports with face recognition technology.

Citizens from 27 countries with visa waivers were supposed to have machine-readable passports by 26 October 2004. However, the countries have indicated that at this point they will be unable to meet the deadline, according to a US State Department official.

Meanwhile, the State Department is redesigning US passports to include a chip to store biometric data, identity information and a digital photo, reported The Associated Press.
