The US Department of Transport has announced that it is making a number of changes to the rules and regulations for computer reservation systems.

The majority of the rules will be removed on 31 January 2004 with two remaining ones being phased out at the end of July 2004. The regulations are being phased out as they were reportedly introduced when computer reservation systems were owned and operated by airlines and were the sole source for the booking and sale of airline tickets.

A spokesperson for the US DOT said that the rules are no longer necessary due to the changes that have been introduced in the way airline tickets are bought and sold.
