The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has announced that is to investigate a near collision between a Qantas Airways Boeing 737 aircraft and a Jetstar Boeing 777 near Hamilton Island.
The incident over Australia's east coast happened on 17 July 2004 when the Jetstar aircraft banked sharply to avoid the Qantas aircraft shortly after take-off from Hamilton Island airport.
A spokesperson for Qantas said that both aircraft were in visual contact at all times and there was no danger to the passengers on either flight. An ATSB official said that early reports suggest a misunderstanding of procedures, reports The Associated Press.
