The Irish government has proposed a new bill which would break up the company that runs Ireland's three major airports by April 2005.

Under the proposed State Airports Bill, Aer Rianta would be split into three separate, competing, state-run authorities each operating the airports in Dublin, Cork and Shannon.

The government claims that the bill, supported by Irish low-cost airline Ryanair but opposed by labour unions, would improve efficiency and foster investment in the three airports, reports The Associated Press.
