John F. Kennedy International Airport is to begin using infrared energy to de-ice aircraft this winter.

The method, Infra-Tek, uses infrared energy to melt and evaporate ice and snow. It is the only radiant system approved by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for de-icing commercial aircraft.

The new de-icing method is expected to help make winter operations at the airport more efficient, further reducing the possibility of weather-related delays and cancellations.
