AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2004 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
From 10 April 2004, Malaysia's Air Asia will open three new routes providing direct flights from three cities in Malaysia to three cities in Indonesia. The first will connect Johor Baru with Jakarta, while a route linking Kuala Lumpur with Bandung will be opened on 12 April 2004. The airline will then launch flights between Kuala Lumpur and Surabaya from 15 April 2004.
American Airlines is to add a second nonstop flight between Boston and San Jose, Calif. The new flight will be effective from 10 June 2004, and will be operated daily using Boeing 757 aircraft, seating 22 in First Class and 166 in main-cabin seats.
United Airlines' new low-fare service, Ted, has expanded its operations and is now offing flights between Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Denver. The airline will reportedly offer eight daily round trips on the route by the end of March 2004. Ted has also launched a service from Denver to Orlando, Fla., and will offer flights from Washington-Dulles to Las Vegas, Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa and Orlando from 7 April 2004.
A new state airline in Venezuela, Conviasa, is scheduled to launch domestic operations in July 2004. The airline will reportedly launch on 5 July 2004, with short-range flights using small aircraft. The carrier will be a joint venture of the country's armed forces and investors, and will have headquarters on the tourist island of Margarita.
