A biologist was detained at Boston's Logan International Airport after a severed head of a harbour seal was found in his luggage.

The man was preparing to board a flight to Denver when airport security agents found the head in his luggage. The man told investigators that he is a biology professor and that he found a dead seal on Revere Beach and cut off its head so he could use it for educational purposes. The man was permitted to board the aircraft, however the head was confiscated.

The man could face charges that carry criminal fines of up to USD20,000 and imprisonment of up to a year, reported The Associated Press.
