Vietnam is reportedly planning to open a civilian airport at a former US military base at Cam Ranh Bay.
In a bid to turn the area into a tourist destination, the government has spent more than VND50bn to upgrade the two runways and build a new terminal at the airport. The airport could also be expanded from a domestic airport to an international facility by 2006 depending on passenger demand.
The new airport is scheduled to open on 19 May 2004, according to The Associated Press.
