Australian discount carrier Virgin Blue is to impose a fuel surcharge in order to meet higher jet fuel prices.
The increase follows an earlier move by Qantas Airways to increase passenger fares. Qantas said that it would increase its fares to combat a 57% rise in fuel costs in the past year.
Virgin Blue will introduce a surcharge of AUD6 per flight on reservations made after midnight on 17 May 2004. The surcharge for Pacific Blue flights will be AUD10.
