The leader of a group of Palestinian terrorists who hijacked a Pan Am jet in 1986 has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the US.

Zayd Hassan Abd Al-Latif Masud Al Safarini has been sentenced to three consecutive life terms plus 25 years on 95 charges of murder, attempted murder and conspiracy to attempt murder as part of a plea agreement approved yesterday (13 May) in the US District Court.

The hijackers took control of the Boeing 747 aircraft on 5 September 1986 while it was parked at Karachi Airport with 379 passengers on board. The hijackers killed 22 of those on board.

Judge Emmet Sullivan will also recommend to the Bureau of Prisons that Al Safarini never be paroled and that he be sent to a super-maximum security prison in Florence, Colo., reported The Associated Press.
