The European Commission may drop legal action against German airport operator Fraport AG's plan to extend Frankfurt airport.

The Commission launched legal action against Germany in March 2004, as plans for a new runway at the airport did not take into account the possibility of an aircraft smashing into a chemical plant near the airport.

The state government of Hesse, where the airport is located, is to examine a number of alternative plans that would follow European Union safety guidelines, reported Reuters.
