Taiwan-based airline China Airlines has been ordered to pay JPY177m in damages to the family of a man killed in a 1994 crash.

The Nagoya District Court in Japan ordered the airline to pay damages to the man's family for his death in the 26 April 1994 crash, which killed 264 passengers and crew members out of the 271 people on board the flight.

The Airbus A300-600R passenger jet from Taipei was climbing on auto-pilot in preparation for a new landing attempt at Nagoya airport when the crash occurred. Investigators blamed the incident on a series of steering mistakes by the pilot and copilot, who were both killed in the crash.

However, the court dismissed a damages claim against European aircraft manufacturer Airbus.
