Firms in the UK may be prevented from advertising "free" deals if customers then face compulsory charges, such as taxes.

The UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is currently considering a complaint from the Passenger Shipping Association concerning a newspaper promotion by budget Irish airline Ryanair. The association - representing UK ferry operators - complained that as the deal did not include taxes it could not be described as a "giveaway".

The ASA is due to announce its decision on the complaint next month, reported Ananova.
