Check-in and ground services company Swissport UK has gone into administration with the loss of 900 jobs at London's Heathrow Airport.

The company stopped operations at the airport on 16 November 2004, with other ground services companies taking over its duties throughout the airport's four terminals. Workers' unions said they were doing all they could for staff and airport operator BAA said it was working with airlines to minimise disruption. Swissport handled services for 11 airlines including Aer Lingus and Air China.

A spokesperson for the company said that following years of unprofitable business at Heathrow Airport and attempts to reverse the loss the company had decided to place Swissport UK into administration. Swissport UK's parent company will continue to operate normally, reports the BBC.
