Singapore and Australia are set to restart talks over a new open skies aviation agreement following comments from both governments on the issue.

Australia's transport minister said that he would reconsider the stalled deal within the next 18 months, prompting his counterpart in Singapore to announce that the government was looking forward to resurrecting the deal. The talks were suspended in 2003 after the Iraq War and the SARS outbreak plunged the airline industry into crisis.

Singapore's transport minister said that he hoped the deal could be sorted out soon now the market was stabilising and that carriers from both countries can enjoy the benefits. Any new deal would allow Singapore Airlines to compete directly with Australian carrier Qantas on direct flights from Australia and on lucrative routes to the US, reports Channel News Asia.
