European mobile phone company Siemens and air transport technology company SITA have announced that they hope to offer an airline check-in service via mobile phones in 2005.

The two companies have teamed up to develop the service, which uses GPRS. They claim that the service will allow passengers to check in, change seats and check flight times via their mobile phones, helping to alleviate airport congestion.

A spokesperson for SITA said that the air travel industry is constantly looking to address problems of increasing choice while reducing costs and that Siemens and SITA believe the SITA Mobile Check-in does both. Brazilian airline TAM is to be the first airline to use the service sometime in 2005, reports Reuters.
