The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has decided to extend the three-week period it was allowing airports to switch from federal security screeners to private employees.

The TSA had scheduled the three-week period to begin on 18 November 2004 but has now decided to extend the period indefinitely with a spokesperson for the TSA saying that it was happy to work with airports that wanted to hire private screeners. Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks all airport screening of baggage and passengers has been done by federal officers.

Executive vice president of the Airports Council International Steve van Beek said that he knew of 20 airports that would be making the switch, which many airports claim would make it easier for them to move staff around to cover periods of heavy traffic as it would cut out inflexible federal bureaucracy, reports The Associated Press.
