Customs officials at Milan's Malpensa airport have said that they have detained 19 people after an investigation into an alleged theft ring at the airport.

Police said that the investigation has centred on jewellery, watches and paintings that were stolen after they arrived from abroad via FedEx Express. Some of those detained were said to be FedEx employees.

A statement from FedEx said that it will continue helping the police with their investigations so that the perpetrators can be brought to justice. In 2002 police caught baggage handlers at Malpensa airport going through people's luggage after using hidden cameras, leading to 18 people being dismissed and a further 11 resigning, reports The Associated Press.
