UK fighter jets escort Pakistan International Airways aircraft to airport

Two RAF fighter jets were scrambled to escort a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) aircraft to Manchester Airport after if repeatedly failed to make contact with air traffic control.

The UK National Air Traffic Services (Nats) said that it called the RAF support in after the PIA Boeing 747 aircraft failed to make contact with air traffic control in the Netherlands and UK. The fighter jets escorted the aircraft for 15 minutes and to within 40 miles of Manchester Airport.

A spokesperson for Nats said that the crew eventually made contact with air traffic control and landed safely at the airport. The UK Civil Aviation Authority has launched an investigation, reports The Associated Press.
