The city of Shanghai in China has announced that it is to expand its airport facilities in an attempt to become a regional hub for domestic and international air travel.

Shanghai's biggest airport, Pudong International Airport, is to add three new runways to its current one with construction on the second runway due to be speeded up as the airport is close to reaching its capacity limit. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) said that it is behind the new plans and will allow all Chinese airlines to offer flights from the city.

The competition to attract airlines to the region is fierce with airport authorities in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Japan and Korea all vying to attract airlines and passengers to secure regional hub status. Shanghai's Hongqiao Airport is now used as a purely domestic hub and together with Pudong has seen 35m passengers pass through so far in 2004, reports The Associated Press.
