A volcano has erupted under a glacier in Iceland, throwing thick black ash and smoke into the air and causing disruption to flights in the eastern areas of the country.
The eruption began on 1 November 2004 and the authorities issued a warning to aircraft to avoid the region around the Vatnajokull glacier in eastern Iceland. A spokesperson for the Icelandic Civil Aviation Administration said that flying through volcanic ash was incredibly dangerous and that it had been known to stop all four engines on large aircraft.
The eruption is not thought to be threatening to nearby communities but the volcanic cloud is expected to drift some 500 miles over the North Atlantic and may reach the Norwegian coast, reports Reuters.
