The Irish government is set to make a decision on the future of national carrier Aer Lingus before Christmas 2004 according to a government spokesperson.

The issue is set to be discussed by a cabinet sub-committee made up of, among others, the Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern and Minister for Transport Martin Cullen. The meeting on 22 November 2004 will focus on a report on the airline published by finance company Goldman Sacchs and options open to it including a stock market floatation.

Aer Lingus has been pressing the government for a decision on its future as it is attempting to raise EUR1bn over the next five years to fund its expansion, something that the government would not be able to fund under EU regulation. Unions representing Aer Lingus workers said that it was not aware of any privatisation plans, reports Ireland Online.
