Bankrupt US carrier United Airlines has asked a bankruptcy court to agree to the cancellation of its union contracts by mid-January 2005 if a new concessions package worth USD725m is not agreed.

The airline claims that the new concessions from its workers and the ability to drop its traditional pension schemes are crucial to the company being able to secure financing and escape bankruptcy. United Airlines' staff have already agreed USD2.5bn worth of annual concessions.

In a court filing the airline said it was committed to agreeing a deal with unions but needed court backing due to its urgent financial needs. United Airlines has already suggested ways in which the Air Line Pilots Association could cut the USD191.1m it has been asked for, including an 18% pay cut, but a spokesperson for the union said that this was just a starting point for negotiations, reports The Associated Press.
