Florida-based low-cost carrier AirTran Airways has announced a new, expanded schedule from Chicago's Midway Airport where it is seeking permission to buy rival carrier ATA Airlines' gates.

The airline will offer seven new daily services from Midway to Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando, Sarasota/Bradenton and Tampa from 11 January 2004. AirTran Airways' president and chief operating officer Bob Fornaro said he hoped that the new services will be the start of an even bigger expansion at the airport through its partnership with ATA Airlines.

A deal for AirTran to take over ATA's gates at Chicago Midway has already been struck but faces challenges from other airlines and has yet to be approved by the City of Chicago, which claims it has authority over the gates.
