A row over contract oversights during the USD4.8bn expansion project at Miami-Dade airport in Florida has led to the resignation of the county's aviation director.

Angela Gittens was under pressure to resign when the newly elected County Mayor Carlos Alvarez supported County Manager George Burgess after he said that he could not work with Gittens. The airport expansion project had been dogged corruption scandals until Gittens was hired in 2001 after her success as Atlanta's airport director.

Gittens and the Miami-Dade commissioners had been locked in a row over how to investigate the contract oversights that took place during the expansion with Gittens supporting an independent board while some commissioners wanted to keep a hold of the airport's budget, reports The Associated Press.
