An Algerian man who attacked the pilots on a domestic flight in Norway has been charged with hijacking by Norwegian police.

A spokesperson for the police said that the unnamed asylum seeker has been charged with attempting to hijack an aircraft, a charge that carries a maximum prison sentence of 21 years. The attacker was assessed at a psychiatric hospital before being moved to a regular jail in Bodoe.

The preliminary charge forms the basis for a court order which would allow the police to hold the man for four weeks while investigations are carried out, reports Reuters.
