Norway is to review its airport security after a man smuggled an axe on board an aircraft and attacked the pilots as the flight was coming in to land.

Although the pilots were able to land the aircraft they were both injured along with a passenger. The attacker boarded the flight at a Narvik airport, one of 28 small local airports where full security checks are not required by law and where X-ray and metal detecting equipment has not been installed.

The Norwegian Civil Aviation Authority is now looking to introduce a series of immediate steps to help local airports boost security ahead of new rules that come into force on 1 January 2005 that require all airports to undertake full security checks and have X-ray and metal detecting equipment, reports The Associated Press.
