China Southern Airlines is to start services from Australia to keep pace with a growing tourist and business demand for links between the two countries.

China Southern, the largest airline in China, will begin a five flights a week service using Boeing 777 aircraft from 5 November 2004, flying from Melbourne via Sydney to Guangzhou on Thursdays and Sundays and direct from Sydney on the other three flights which will then increase to a daily service on 2 December 2004 until 26 March 2005.

The schedule is to cover the peak Christmas/New Year period and will also meet the increased demand for travel from Australia to China. Package holidays and independent travel to China from Australia have increased significantly over the last few years, reports Asia Pulse.
