Low-cost Irish carrier Ryanair and the new Shannon Airport Authority in Ireland are in discussions over a possible move that could see passenger traffic at the airport increase to 4.3m.

Ryanair's CEO Michael O'Leary has proposed that the airline open up 10 new routes from Shannon airport which would serve both the UK and the European mainland. O'Leary said that the new services would almost double the number of passengers that pass through the airport each year from the current 2.3m.

O'Leary's only demand is that the airport authority lower its landing charges from EUR7.50 per passenger to just EUR1 per passenger. Ryanair has already protested over the landing fees at the airport when it was under the control of Aer Rianta by puling out of Shannon and transferring its German flights to Kerry Airport, reports Luchtzak Aviation.
